THE NERVOUS SYSTEM HIGHWAY!
The nervous system is the thinking, breathing, walking, feeling, living highway that controls our entire body! It connects the brain and spinal cord to all the nerves of your body. The brain is the control center and the spinal cord is the major highway to and from the brain. The brain lies protected inside the skull and controls all the body functions by sending and receiving messages through the nerves like a computer! It’s like a power station sending and receiving billions of bits of information about what is happening in the body and surrounding the body. It’s made up of billions of nerve cells! The two main parts of the nervous system are the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system.
YOU GOT SOME NERVE!
And that nerve is a fibre that sends impulses through the body! It’s called the Central Nervous System (CNS), is the processing area and the Peripheral Nervous System finds and sends electrical impulses that are used in the nervous system. Nerve cells work by a mixture of chemical and electrical action. The Autonomic System is responsible for keeping the body going, like breathing and digesting so that you don’t have to think about it every time you do it. Can you imagine?! That would be exhausting!
WHAT CAN I DO TO TAKE CARE OF MY LIVING HIGHWAY!
Exercise is amazing for your living highway! When you exercise the body releases a chemical called serotonin – the feel good chemical. It helps to relax the muscles and get rid of stress!
Foods like asparagus that have a lot of folic acid are excellent for the nervous system! Other great foods and vegetables are avocados because they have a lot of B vitamins for nerve and brain cells! Other great foods are blueberries, almonds, oranges, salmon and spinach. I’m off to fuel my highway!
